2002 National Yo-Yo Contest
Championship Trick List

These tricks are the 'Trick List 2002' that we developed for use in the major contests this year. This is the same list that was utilized at the World Yo-Yo Contest in Orlando, August 2002. In following years, we will develop a yearly list that will be the standard for that year in all League, National, and World contests.

Next years list will be presented in March 2003 in time to allow the League of Contests to include it in their promotions. With a yearly list of tricks, players can more easily conform to a consistent judging standard. Results can be compiled to enhance the quality of future contests. Internet trick videos will serve as instruction for all the contests. And most of all, a player will know what to expect when attending a contest.

1A Division

1. Pop n' Fresh / Boingy / Mach 5
2. Eli Hop (6 reps)
3. Double Gerbil
4. Hop in the Bucket (5 Hops)
5. Buddha's Fusion
6. White Buddha (simplified version)
7. Kwijibo
8. Slack Trapeze
9. Spirit Bomb
10. Suicide Catch (3 reps)

Read trick descriptions carefully. All tricks are to be performed as described in the text and accompanying video (if available). Flipovers, string misses, or binds will not be allowed. This round allows one attempt of each trick for five points, a second attempt (if necessary) for three points. Compulsory score is the total of the points scored on the ten tricks. Top scoring players advance to the final freestyle.

Pop n' Fresh / Boingy / Mach 5 [video]
Start with a split-bottom mount. Go directly into a Mach 5 hold by performing two underpasses with your freehand index finger (no string shortening somersaults allowed). Now perform five pops. The fifth pop will leave you in position to go directly into Boingy. Perform five reps of Boingy (back and forth counts as one rep). Now go directly back into a Mach 5 hold by performing two more underpasses with your freehand index finger, then perform five full Mach 5 revolutions, unwind to a sleeper and then return yo-yo to hand.

Eli Hop (6 reps) [video]
Start with a trapeze mount and perform six hops (or pops). Hands must touch during each of the six hops. End with a Ferris wheel dismount.

Double Gerbil [video]
Full momentum trapeze mount into an inside somersault continuing into a lindy-loop, and then unwind the lindy-loop with an outside reverse somersault into a reverse lindy-loop. Unwind the reverse lindy-loop and intentionally miss landing a lindy-loop and land it on the flip over. Unwind the lindy-loop back to a trapeze hold and go directly into a second full Gerbil ending with a Ferris wheel dismount.

Hop in the Bucket (5 Hops) [video]
Start with a drop in the bucket mount and perform five hops in the bucket. During each hop the yo-yo must rise above the bucket by at least one yo-yo diameter. After the fifth hop, toss the yo-yo onto the string furthest from the body. Then drop string off thumb of freehand and index finger of throw-hand into a trapeze hold and end with a Ferris wheel.

Buddha's Fusion [video]
Start with a one-and-a-half mount and perform two reps of Buddha's Revenge, then from the one-and-a-half mount hold, cross throw-hand under freehand and pop to Double or Nothing. From the Double or Nothing position perform the two string transfers of Cold Fusion (see S1 division trick #17), then toss yo-yo over freehand index finger so that the string segments land on (not just over) freehand index finger then toss the yo-yo back over so that the string segments land on throw-hand index finger and perform one Pin Wheel, then unwind (two reverse Pin Wheels) and perform a snag catch and end with a Ferris wheel dismount.

White Buddha (simplified version) [video]
Throw the beginning of one-and-a-half mount. After the yo-yo hits the top string, just let it bounce off and land immediately on the bottom string. Now go into a one-and-a-half mount hold with your freehand directly above your throw-hand. Next, flip everything by moving your freehand down and your throw-hand up - flipping the yo-yo as well - counter-clockwise. This is just like Buddha's Revenge. Now spread the string with the thumb and index finger of your throw-hand and flip the yo-yo out of the bucket. Immediately flip the yo-yo back into the bucket. Now flip the yo-yo clockwise over your freehand and throw-hand. Next flip the yo-yo back counter-clockwise over your freehand and throw-hand, and flip the yo-yo over your freehand index finger onto the double string. The yo-yo should now be held in a "V" with your freehand crossed slightly over your throw-hand. Now drop the string loop from your throw-hand index finger into the yo-yo groove in front off all the strings. You will now be in what looks like a trapeze hold but it is not. The yo-yo is being held in this hold by a "bind" caused by the dropped string loop. Now you must pause for at least one second and then pull string with throw-hand releasing the bind. The yo-yo will drop out of this false trapeze hold and will be hanging over the outside of freehand index finger. Flip yo-yo back into a trapeze hold and end trick with a Ferris wheel dismount.

Kwijibo [video]
Trapeze mount, then perform an upward pop into a wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold (with throw-hand over freehand), then roll throw-hand over and under freehand into a wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold (with freehand over throw-hand), then pop to a double or nothing hold, then pop to a trapeze hold and end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). (Note that yo-yo must be popped upward on all three hops, not to the side, and on the first pop the throw-hand must be clearly crossed over the freehand so that the yo-yo is caught in the middle of a close to horizontal wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold.) Note that all pops must go above the player's head.

Slack Trapeze [video]
Throw a trapeze, pop the yo-yo off the trapeze, and pinch the string between the pointer and middle fingers on the freehand. With the throw-hand, throw the string over the freehand arm, forming a "U", and allow the part of the "U" furthest from you to mount itself onto the yo-yo in one continuous motion. Swing the yo-yo clockwise over the freehand and throw-hand, and you will be back in trapeze. End trick with a Ferris wheel dismount.

Spirit Bomb [video]
Throw a Breakaway over freehand index finger (not over thumb) into a wrist-bucket mount, perform a double pass under with freehand index finger, pop yo-yo up, bring throw-hand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment, pop yo-yo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over freehand index finger back into wrist-bucket mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your throw-hand and land on bottom string segment), perform two pass unders with freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into trapeze hold, end with a Ferris wheel dismount.

Suicide Catch (3 reps) [video]
Throw a trapeze mount, let the yo-yo swing under the throw-hand and pull your freehand index finger out of the wrap and let the string segments loop over your throw-hand. As the loop comes over the throw-hand poke your freehand index finger back into the loop. At this point you should be back in a trapeze hold completing one rep. Perform two additional reps back to a trapeze hold. All Suicide throws must be from a trapeze hold over the throw-hand and must be caught on the index finger only of the freehand. End with a Ferris wheel dismount.

National 1A Tiebreakers:

1. Kwijibo (2 Reps)
From the Trapeze hold at the end of the first rep perform a full second rep of Kwijibo and end with a Ferris wheel dismount.

2. White Buddha
Full Version (note the description is for right handed players): Throw the beginning of one-and-a-half mount.

Once again spread the string with your thumb and index finger of your throw hand and flip the yo-yo out of the bucket. This time let the yo-yo momentum carry around over your throw hand index finger and onto the same string. Drop the further string off your free hand index finger and then do a complete counter clockwise revolution missing both your index fingers. Now you should be in a Trapeze and his brother hold. Pop the yo-yo of to the right and back around so you go back into a one and a half mount.

3. Suicide Catch (5 reps)

4. Most Iron Whips on one throw.

If still tied repeat tiebreaker number 4 until the tie is broken.
