2002 NATIONAL SPIN TOP CONTEST

The 2002 National Spin Top Contest will consist of two divisions: A Sport Ladder division and a Championship division. Players may enter either one but not both.

2002 National Spin Top Sport Ladder

First place awards will be presented in the following age groups:
10 & under, 11-12, 13-16, 17-29, 30-44, 45 & over.

Rules:

Any Top may be used for ladder, you may change tops at any time. All tricks must end with a spinner for 5 seconds either in hand or as directed by instructions. Players get two attempts at each trick. Players score is determined when a player has missed a second try on two tricks, points will be determined as follows:

5 points for each trick completed on first try.
3 points for each trick completed on second try.

Tie Breakers:

Player who went furthest (last trick completed, first or second try) on Ladder, or if still a tie, Player who went furthest on Ladder before first miss of second try. If more than one player completes the Ladder with no misses, then the tie breaker will be roller coaster with judge directed variations.

2002 National Spin Top Championship Division

Championship division awards will be given to the first three places. The contest will consist of 10 compulsory tricks to determine the top ten scores, who will freestyle. All tricks must be done exactly as described and show in the video. All tricks must end with a spinner for 5 seconds either in hand or as directed by instructions.

The trick list consists of 10 tricks, 5 tricks done with a fixed tip top and 5 tricks done with a bearing tip top. Players get two attempts at each trick.

Points will be determined as follows:

5 points for each trick completed on first try.
3 points for each trick completed on second try.

Tie Breakers:

Double reps of Roller Coaster, then Drumbeat, and then Bermuda Triangle and double reps again until ties are broken

Championship Division Freestyle Format

All 10 finalists will be on stage arranged by compulsory score lowest to highest. Each player will throw, in rotation, a freestyle lasting one minute maximum. There will be three throws total by each player. The first rotation will be with a fixed tip top. The second rotation will be with a bearing tip top. The third rotation will be players choice. During a players turn all other players may cheer for that player but may not be a distraction and may not throw. They should have their top wound and ready for their turn. A dropped top can be brought back into play if still spinning.

Freestyle Judging

Points are given for each completed trick (the first time it is done) with bonus points for difficulty and originality. Points for each different regeneration trick are given for the first five reps. Tricks done after five regenerations (with fixed point) should automatically get a difficulty bonus. There will be bonus points awarded for continuos play. If a top is dropped and still spinning and returned to play with the string or a big scoop the freestyle continues but the continuous play clock stops. Bonus points for continuous play are as follows: 30 seconds of continuous play receives 5 bonus points, 40 seconds gets another 5 points, 50 seconds another 5 points and 60 seconds receives an additional 10 points. In other words, continuous tricking for the full minute garners 25 additional points. There will be a separate timekeeper counting these time points. There are no deducts. Dropping the top creates its own penalty.
